Sven Mislintat (50), the VfB Stuttgart’s director of sports, will be leaving.

Information from BILD indicated that Table 16 had. The Bundesliga Mislintat made a contract extension offer.

Mislinat declined to. That effectively ended his stay. Although his contract, which is valid until June 2023, will be terminated immediately, he will still be paid throughout that time.

According to reports, the VfB offer contained drastically decreased payments: up to 1.5 million euros instead of the prior 2 million per year, depending on success. Additionally, there was no longer the ‘unanimity provision’ that the sports director had in his prior contract.

This clause specifies that Mislintat’s veto may not be overridden while making personnel decisions in the sports industry. In the Bundesliga, no other sports director has that much authority.

Due to this provision, which their predecessors had agreed, the VfB bosses around CEO Alexander Wehrle (47) were reliant on Mislintat for all decisions regarding sports people.

It makes sense why they wanted to remove it.

Mislintat’s demise had been clear for weeks due to the ongoing tension between Wehrle and Mislintat. Mislintat did not approve of Wehrle’s hiring of world champions Sami Khedira (35) and Philipp Lahm (39), but he was unable to stop it because they were hired as outside advisers.

Additionally, Mislintat stalled too long in firing coach Pellegrino Matarazzo (45, finished on October 10). Additional criticisms of Mislintat’s work include the unanswered successor question, a bloated squad (which includes ten loan professionals who are returning), and the subpar placement on the relegation spot.

In April 2019, Sven Mislintat left Arsenal FC for VfB, acquired Matarazzo, and returned to the Bundesliga in 2020 with him. After a successful season, he was unable to elevate VfB above the level of a relegation contender.
