Seven killed near migrant shelter after being struck by car in Texas

At least seven people are dead after a deadly car incident in Brownsville, Texas Sunday morning, according to police.

A driver, 30-year Michael Alexander Nash, allegedly rammed his vehicle into multiple people near Ozanam Center, a shelter for the homeless and migrants around 8:30 a.m. local time, authorities said.

As many as six people are receiving treatment for injuries stemming from the incident, which took place around Minnesota Road and North Bernal Road, per police. Injuries range from serious to minor.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is being screened for possible drug or alcohol use. He is being kept in the hospital and is under 24-hour supervision, according to local reports.

A motive for the incident is not immediately clear.

Brownsville is a city fixated in close proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border. The accident comes amid high anticipation of a migrant surge next ween week after the pandemic-era Title 42 policy expires on May 11.

The number of victims involved in a Wednesday morning car crash involving recruits from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office has now reached 25, an increase from the initial report earlier in the day.

The details among the injured include 16 suffering from minor injuries, four having moderate injuries, and five in critical condition, according to police. The driver of the car involved in this incident had been driving on the wrong side of the road when he crashed into the recruits from various law enforcement agencies before crashing into a light pole, according to a press conference held by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.

"They had zero warning," said Capt. Pat MacDonald. "Thank God for that light pole because the vehicle ultimately hit it and stopped as opposed to possibly hitting more recruits."

Injuries involved in this collision include loss of limbs, head trauma, and broken bones, LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said during a press conference.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the recruits did not have alcohol in his system at the time of the crash, based on a Breathalyzer test, Villanueva said. He is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.

All of the injured in this accident have been transported to the nearest hospitals, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“Our hearts are with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s recruits injured this morning while training to serve their communities," read a statement from California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). "Jennifer and I send our best wishes for their recovery and stand with their loved ones and colleagues at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department during this difficult time.”
