UAW won't endorse Biden until its electric vehicle concerns are met: Report

President Joe Biden will have to do some work to secure an endorsement from one of his closest allies.

The United Auto Workers labor union said it will not back Biden for a second term unless its concerns over electric vehicle subsidies are addressed.

“The federal government is pouring billions into the electric vehicle transition, with no strings attached and no commitment to workers,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in a message. “The EV transition is at serious risk of becoming a race to the bottom. We want to see national leadership have our back on this before we make any commitments.”

Biden frequently calls himself the most pro-union president in history, but he's also struggling to balance his labor ties with the concerns of foreign leaders. The auto industry is attempting a transition to fully electric vehicles, which includes a heavy dose of government subsidies through legislation such as the Inflation Reduction Act.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Biden campaign for comment.

Fain claims he wants a "just transition" for the union's members and says that isn't happening at the moment.

President Joe Biden has worked hard to secure the votes of labor leaders and blue-collar workers in manufacturing-heavy states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, all of which he flipped from then-President Donald Trump in 2020. He frequently visits all three and makes stump speeches about bringing manufacturing back to life.

The union made clear it will not be backing Trump but that it's looking for more support from the incumbent.

The UAW is concerned that the electric vehicle transition could lead to thousands of job losses, according to a letter.

Electric vehicles require less traditional labor and parts than cars with internal combustion engines.

California voters reject union-backed dialysis clinic rules for the third time

California voters have shot down a ballot measure that would impose new rules on kidney dialysis clinics across the state for the third consecutive general election.

Proposition 29 once again pitted for-profit dialysis clinics opposing the changes against a healthcare workers union aiming to set new rules on patient care, with collective campaign spending totaling over $94 million.

The initiative would have required the state’s roughly 650 dialysis clinics to have a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant on-site during treatment, in addition to dialysis technicians.

Two private for-profit dialysis companies, DaVita Inc. and Fresenius Medical Care, which opposed the measure, said that measure would have driven up clinics' expenses, forcing them to reduce services or shut down, affecting patient care.

California Legislative Analyst's Office found that the proposition would have likely increased each clinic’s costs by several hundred thousand dollars annually on average, largely because of the additional staffing requirement.

Proponents, including the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, said that it would require more transparency from dialysis companies and improve patient safety.

The proposition is the third time voters have weighed in on changes to dialysis clinic operations. A ballot measure in 2020 aimed to institute similar requirements for dialysis clinics as the present one and garnered over $105 million from the opposition and $9 million from proponents, though it was rejected by over 60% of voters.

The pilots’ union, the Allied Pilots Affiliation, has taken to social media to slam American Airlines’s administration in excess of scheduling grievances.

In video clip ads, the pilots insist their schedules are adjusted at the worst moments, and the corporation will not seem to care how the changes inconvenience them.

The union also touted Delta Air Traces, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines in an advertisement, encouraging prospects to book flights on other airways that position a higher emphasis on personnel relations.

“I definitely have one duty, which is to make our staff happy,” the advertisement stated, quoting United Airways CEO Scott Kirby. “If our workforce are happy of United Airlines, they are heading to want the shoppers to feel like they do about United.”

The adverts depict American Airways crew associates receiving notices that their perform timetable has changed at the final minute.

A further advert observed that “passengers deserve more dependable scheduling from American Airlines,” finishing with “pilots do, far too.”

American Airways did not reply to the Washington Examiner’s ask for for remark.
