The first set of May's three Social Security payments, worth up to $4,555, will be sent out to retirees on Wednesday, according to the Social Security Administration's schedule.

The payment will be sent to those born between the 1st and the 10th of a month and will be disbursed on May 10, the second Wednesday of May. The payments are sent out on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

The second distribution will go to retirees born between the 11th and 20th of a month and will be released on May 17, the third Wednesday of May. The final wave will be sent out a week later, on May 24, for those born between the 21st and 31st of their birth month.

The amount of money each recipient gets depends on their age at retirement. Recipients who retired at 67 can receive a maximum check of $3,627, people who retired at 62 get up to $2,572, and those who delayed retirement until age 70 get the highest payment of $4,555 per month, according to the SSA.

Recipients could see a decrease in their payments if Congress does not figure out how the program will be funded by 2037. Discussions on the future of Social Security have occurred in Congress for years, but experts warned last month that the program could be insolvent in 10 years if nothing is done.

Some lawmakers have proposed raising the age at which citizens receive their full benefits from 67 to 70. Workers can already retire and collect Social Security as early as 62 or delay retirement until they are 70 for a higher check.

Social Security update: Direct payment worth $914 arriving in 26 days

Supplemental Security Income recipients will receive their May payment in 26 days. Individual filers will get $914, according to the Social Security Administration's schedule.

The next payment, scheduled for May 1, is one of 12 payments that SSI recipients receive each year. Most SSI payments are sent out to recipients on the first business day of the month, but recipients did not receive a payment in April, because April 1 fell on a weekend.

COUPLES WHO SHARE BANK ACCOUNTS REPORT FEWER FINANCIAL PROBLEMS: STUDY

Other groups also qualify for the May 1 payment. Eligible couples will receive a payment of $1,371. Essential people, who live with a person receiving SSI and provide necessary care, will get a payment of $458.

For months when the first takes place on a weekend or a holiday, checks are sent on the last business day of the previous month, according to the SSA. This guarantees recipients receive their check by the first of the month. Because of this scheduling quirk, recipients received two checks in March — one on March 1 and the other on March 31.

SSI payments were first issued by the Social Security Administration in January 1974. The amount recipients receive has increased based on cost-of-living adjustments each year since 1975, the agency said.

The supplemental payments are separate from the main retirement pay that retirees receive each month.
