Stimulus check update: Direct payment worth $800 to be paid out to recipients in nine days

Selected residents of Palm Springs, California, only need to wait nine days before a guaranteed income program begins paying $800 every month.

The program, which is being run by nonprofit organizations Queer Works and DAP Health, selected 30 recipients earlier this year in March and will begin the 18-month pay schedule on May 15. The recipients of this program will be free to spend this monthly payment in any way they see fit, according to Queer Works.

To have been eligible for this program, applicants needed to have an income of no more than 30% of the median income of Riverside County, which is equal to $16,600. Additionally, applicants needed to be clients of either Queer Works and/or DAP Health and be considered primary residents of Palm Springs.

The funding for this program, which Queer Works described as universal basic income, comes from $500,000 from the city of Palm Springs.

As part of this guaranteed income program, recipients will be required to participate in a study by Queer Works, which will involve surveys taken each month. The data from this program will be made available every six months, with the final report expected in winter 2024.

Applications for this program opened on March 15 and closed on March 25. The selected recipients of the program were notified of their selection on March 30.

The program is one of several guaranteed income programs taking place in California. In the city of El Monte, a program paying 125 applicants $500 every month is expected to begin on June 1, and in Sonoma County, recipients of the Pathway to Income Equity pilot program, who receive $500 every month, will receive their next payment on May 17.

Police reveal names of five killed in Club Q nightclub shooting

Video Embed Law enforcement officials divulged Monday the names of the five victims killed in the tragic Club Q nightclub shooting late Saturday night that left at least 19 injured. Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez read the names of the five victims during a press conference Monday evening. The victims were identified as Kelly Loving, Daniel Aston, Derrick Rump, Ashley Paugh, and Raymond Green Vance. SUSPECT IN CLUB Q SHOOTING CHARGED WITH FIRST-DEGREE MURDER, BIAS-MOTIVATED CRIMES "Too often, society loses track of the victims of these sad and tragic events," Vasquez said. "We strive to give the victims the dignity and respect that they deserve. ... I asked everyone who is listening to keep them in your thoughts and show them the care and heartfelt compassion that they deserve." The department posted pictures of the victims provided by their loved ones. Authorities notified the victims' families before disclosing their names to the public. The people wounded from the brutal rampage included 17 injured from gunshots and two others harmed in other ways from the attack, per police. Public officials were tight-lipped about the status of those 19 victims, citing privacy concerns. Vasquez also named two "heroes" who helped "subdue" the assailant: Richard Fierro and Thomas James. He declined to divulge how they stopped the shooter, noting it was part of the investigation. Mayor John Suthers heaped praise on Fierro, whom he met before the presser. “I have never encountered a person who had engaged in such heroic actions that was so humble about it. He simply said to me, 'I was trying to protect my family,'” Suthers said. "We all want to ensure this community is not defined by this tragedy but by our response to it." The suspect, Anderson Aldrich, 22, has been detained and is receiving medical treatment at a hospital. An arrest warrant mentioned five counts of bias-motivated crimes, but officials emphasized those are preliminary charges and have not been filed in court. Aldrich is being held without bond, and after his release from the hospital, he will make a court appearance. He stormed the facility late Saturday and unleashed gunfire in a shooting that carried over into early Sunday morning, which was National Transgender Remembrance Day, officials said. Officials declined to answer questions about whether he offered any statements.   Aldrich had previously been arrested following a bomb threat in June 2021 that culminated in a standoff, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. Motivation for the Club Q attack is still being investigated, Colorado Springs Police Department officials said. Club Q is one of two LGBT clubs in the city, Club Q bartender Michael Anderson told CNN.

At least five killed and 18 injured in shooting at Colorado Springs nightclub

Police confirmed at least five people were killed and 18 people were injured at a shooting at a nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Saturday night.

The suspect, whom officials have not publicly identified, is hospitalized after being injured in the shooting.

PROSECUTOR: WE'RE 'TRYING TO EXPEDITE EVERYTHING' TO IDENTIFY IDAHO UNIVERSITY MURDER SUSPECT

Officials were alerted of the shooting at 11:57 p.m. local time Saturday, with police and firefighters arriving at the scene shortly after, according to Colorado Springs Police Lt. Pamela Castro.

The shooting occurred at Club Q, an LGBT nightclub in the city. Officials have not released any information on the suspect, so a motive is not presently known as the investigation continues.

Club Q writes on its website it will be "closed until further notice," saying it was "devastated by the senseless attack on our community" in a post on its Facebook page early Sunday.

Officials say they will provide further updates on the shooting at 8 a.m. local time Sunday.
