The market is quickly expanding as many tech companies try to compete with Google and OpenAI in the artificial intelligence race with their chatbots.

Microsoft, through OpenAI and its ChatGPT, and Google, with its Bard chatbot, have begun a race to develop the strongest chatbot, one that could innovate with the hope of market control. However, they are not the only ones trying to get into the business of offering chatbots or AI programs. Several other companies are launching chatbots, ones meant to help coders, allow users to role-play as historical characters, or assist in managing Slack messages.

WHITE HOUSE PUSHES FOR RESPONSIBLE AI INNOVATION WHILE MEETING WITH DEVELOPERS

Here are the companies bringing AI to their businesses.

Slack

Salesforce, the owner of Slack, announced on Thursday that it was launching an in-app service known as "SlackGPT," which uses AI-powered software to assist users with managing the app. It will be able to write custom messages in appropriate tones, summarize a thread, or take notes during a call. The company intends to launch the feature next year, according to CNBC, but it did not set a date for when.

Amazon

Amazon Web Services announced its large language model in April. The model would come in two variations, known as Titan and Bedrock. One will generate text, while the other will help power web search personalization for users.

The company also released CodeWhisperer, an AI bot that helps developer double-check their code, check for errors and send it back with analysis. The product is available for free.

Meta AI

The Facebook parent company has begun expanding its investments into AI as a whole. CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors on April 26 that the company sees “an opportunity to introduce AI agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful." The company is exploring the addition of chatbots within the multiple messaging services that it operates, although it remains unclear when these services will be released.

Anthropic

The A.I.-focused startup founded by ex-OpenAI employees launched its own chatbot, named Claude, in March. The bot can perform similar tasks to ChatGPT but is “much less likely to produce harmful outputs,” “easier to converse with,” and “more steerable," according to the company. It also was allegedly trained to avoid "sexist, racist, and toxic outputs," a spokesperson told TechCrunch. The software is used to assist DuckDuckGo with answering direct search queries.

Character.AI

A chatbot developed by former Google engineers, Character.AI was designed specifically to imitate and role-play historical figures. The bot allows users to request to chat with historical figures such as William Shakespeare and some fictional characters. The product was launched in September 2022 but is still in beta.

Open Source

A surprising source of competition to giant corporations has arisen. A collective of open-source AI developers is answering several of the problems that larger companies are confronting.

"Open-source models are faster, more customizable, more private, and pound-for-pound more capable," wrote a group of Google developers in a leaked document. The engineers claimed that Bard and ChatGPT have a "slight edge" in quality but that this edge will close very soon.

The AI industry is getting closer scrutiny from lawmakers as products like Bard and ChatGPT become more prominent. The White House announced on Thursday that it was meeting with experts in the AI industry and launching several new initiatives to empower innovation and determine the safety risks connected to the technology.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced he is working on legislation with experts that would regulate AI in a manner acceptable to Republicans and Democrats. Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) also introduced legislation to create a task force investigating AI policies and their impact on civil liberties.

Ukraine war argument on gaming chat platform reportedly led to classified documents leak

A collection of classified documents leaked from the Pentagon were reportedly initially shared in a private group used by video gamers as part of an argument over the war in Ukraine.

The documents were leaked on the video game chat platform Discord in an effort to win an argument about the Ukraine-Russia war, according to analysts from the investigative journalist group Bellingcat. The documents were posted on the server named "Minecraft Earth Map," which was used to help organize Minecraft players. The documents in question are among those being investigated by the Department of Justice.

ESPER PREDICTS CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS LEAK 'COULD RIPPLE FOR SOME TIME'

"After a brief spat with another person on the server about Minecraft Maps and the war in Ukraine, one of the Discord users replied 'here, have some leaked documents' — attaching 10 documents about Ukraine, some of which bore the 'Top Secret' markings," Bellingcat analyst Aric Toler wrote.

The user who posted the maps claimed they found them on a different Discord server named "WowMao," which was operated by fans of a YouTube creator by the same name. Someone on that server posted 30 documents, many of which were marked "top secret." The same user posted several documents to the server, Toler claims, before it was purged on Apr. 7.

Other users claimed that leaked documents were posted to a Discord server named "Thug Shaker Central." One user claimed the 30 files spread on WowMao were the “tip of the iceberg” compared to those posted on Thug Shaker Central, the latter of which was reportedly deleted, according to users familiar with it.

"Posts and channel listings show that the server's users were interested in video games, music, Orthodox Christianity, and fandom for the popular YouTuber 'Oxide,'" Toler wrote. "This server was not especially geopolitical in nature, although its users had a staunchly conservative stance on several issues, members told Bellingcat. Racial slurs and racist memes were shared widely." Oxide is a Youtube account focusing on military equipment.

Military intelligence leaks around video games are not unheard of. A user from the military simulation game War Thunder claiming to be a tank commander from the British army once posted documents detailing the inside of a French Leclerc tank to resolve an argument.

Dozens of photos of classified documents were leaked on social media in recent weeks, although the authenticity and volume of the leak have yet to be confirmed. The leaks are currently being investigated by the Department of Defense and the DOJ.

Rand Paul breaks ranks with GOP on TikTok ban: 'Goes against the First Amendment'

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is separating himself from the bipartisan push to ban TikTok, a China-affiliated short-form video app, amid fears that it poses national security risks.

At least two bipartisan bills have been floating in the upper chamber to ban the social media app, and the House is mulling similar action. Despite a powerful chorus of Republicans clamoring for the ban, Paul argued that enacting one would trample First Amendment rights.

TIKTOK SQUAD: PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS COME OUT AS ALLIES FOR CHINA-AFFILIATED APP

"I think it's a really bad idea. And people need to ask themselves, why does the Chinese government ban TikTok, and do we want to emulate the Chinese government? So I think it's a mistake," Paul told WHD News. "If you ban a social media platform, you know, I don't know if you get any clearer that that goes against the First Amendment."

One of the bills proposed by Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) and Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) would grant President Joe Biden authority to prohibit the app. Another measure from Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) would outright ban it.

"I'm for the First Amendment to the Constitution, which says that companies that operate in the United States, we shouldn't limit their speech, or people who try to broadcast speech on those platforms," Paul told the outlet.

Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing on TikTok. In it, members of Congress took turns grilling the company's CEO, Shou Zi Chew. He downplayed the company's ties to Beijing. TikTok's parent company is the Chinese firm ByteDance.

China maintains civil-military practices, raising concerns the Chinese Community Party could harvest U.S. data from TikTok.

Chew conceded that ByteDance might have some access to U.S. data, but he underscored that the company is implementing a mitigation plan called Project Texas. Lawmakers appeared unsatisfied with his assurances, as committee Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) subsequently re-upped calls for banning the application.

Democrats have publicly splintered on TikTok, with progressive members such as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) coming out against a ban. But Republicans have largely appeared united.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has voiced support for taking up similar legislation in the House. The Biden administration has been coy about its position on banning the app, but it has sounded the alarms about the national security risks TikTok poses.

Regardless of if a ban gets through Congress, Paul contends that the courts could intervene. In 2020, a federal judge halted then-President Donald Trump's efforts to ban the app.

"The courts have already struck that down when the Trump administration tried to ban TikTok," Paul added. "It was struck down."

An artificial intelligence-powered art bot app banned a journalist after he created images of former President Donald Trump being placed under arrest that were widely distributed on social media.

The AI-generative bot Midjourney banned Eliot Higgins, the founder of the open-source journalist collective Bellingcat, on Wednesday, Higgins said. Higgins had produced 50 images of Trump being accosted by police and in prison in response to his expected indictment. The app responded within 24 hours by banning him.

AWARD-WINNING AI ARTIST VOWS APPEALING COPYRIGHT REJECTION UP TO SUPREME COURT

Higgins initially started by creating pictures of Trump being arrested by police in New York, as well as his family's reaction and his life in prison. The pictures eventually turned into a Shawshank Redemption narrative, according to Higgins. And soon, they went viral.

“I put it out there. I didn't intend to do any clever criticism or anything like that. But then it kind of took on a life of its own,” Higgins told Buzzfeed News.

Midjourney also banned the word "arrest" from being used in prompts.

Higgins isn't angry with the app for banning him.

"I suspect it was pushing my luck when I did the thread, let alone when it went viral," the reporter noted.

A Manhattan grand jury was scheduled to meet on Wednesday to vote on whether to indict Trump over allegations that he paid hush money to Stormy Daniels. However, that meeting was postponed.

Bellingcat is an international open-source journalism group best known for its reporting on Russia and Ukraine.

Midjourney, which is an independent research lab for artificial intelligence, did not respond to requests for comment from the Washington Examiner.

Mind-blowing new AI chatbot writes sophisticated essays and complicated coding

A new chatbot has astounded users with its ability to produce school-level essays and answer coding problems, sparking ethical and technical questions about the software's effects on society.

The OpenAI foundation released ChatGPT to the public last week. The prototype chatbot caught the public's attention after it produced professional-grade answers to academic and coding questions. The viral AI saw its user base quickly surge to 1 million users over six days, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The current bot is an "early demo," Altman argued, saying that it could provide the base for digital assistants in the future. These assistants would first "talk to you, answer questions, and give advice. Later you can have something that goes off and does tasks for you. Eventually, you can have something that goes off and discovers new knowledge for you."

HUNTER BIDEN CONFRONTED ABOUT LAPTOP DRAMA AT WHITE HOUSE EVENT

ChatGPT is the latest evolution of Generative Pre-trained Transformer, or GPT, technology. The app uses a mixture of AI and machine learning to provide relevant information through a chat interface. All answers draw on an extensive collection of text from the internet and are processed by the app to create clear language resembling human statements.

The platform can form logical and plausible-sounding answers based on a large amount of text it had learned from the internet but cannot fact-check or ensure that a statement is accurate. The bot is also able to adapt and learn from its users. "The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests," the chatbot's developers said in a blog post announcing the bot.

The bot can respond to simple queries and provide relevant answers, including descriptions and solutions to complex questions. It also includes the ability to answer complex data-based questions, such as how to write code or solve layout problems.

The accuracy of the bots has astounded several academics, who claim the results resemble undergraduate-level essays. The one downside is that the bot cannot ensure it is providing accurate information. The bot has a significant source of data to use to answer queries but not a "source of truth," according to the developers. It will either provide information already contained within the reviewed data or use it to create a plausible-sounding answer.

For example, tech analyst Ben Thompson asked ChatGPT about Thomas Hobbes's beliefs. While the presented answer appears well-sourced, it fails to present Hobbes's beliefs on the matter properly.

The bot is also sensitive to simple changes in phrasing and may answer the question differently based on the specifics of the query.

While ChatGPT is free, Altman is considering monetizing it by charging per chat. Users can visit OpenAI.com to sign up to use the chatbot. However, users may have to join an email list due to the service being overwhelmed.

Democrats running low on time to pass anti-Big Tech antitrust bills

Christopher Hutton
November 18, 03:00 AM November 18, 03:00 AM
Video Embed Democrats only have a few weeks left to pass Big Tech antitrust legislation before the start of the new term. With the House set to fall into Republican hands in January, Democrats may not have enough time to resolve differences among members and pass the major bipartisan tech reform bills that have been debated over the past year, according to industry watchers. INDUSTRY GROUPS PREPARE FOR BIG TECH INVESTIGATIONS BY GOP-LED HOUSE "We're not going to expect much activity," NetChoice President Carl Szabo told the Washington Examiner, noting that the Senate will not have much time left over in the lame-duck period after working through must-pass legislation, such as bills to fund the government and raise the federal debt limit. Szabo, who leads a conservative tech advocacy organization, also noted that members of Congress are likely to try and pass "pet project bills." For example, Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) are pushing for the Kids Online Safety Act, a bill that provides tools and safeguards for children online, to be incorporated into larger pieces of legislation. However, these bills are minor compared to the larger regulatory pieces of legislation favored by critics of Silicon Valley. The most significant measure with considerable bipartisan support is the American Innovation and Choice Online Act, sponsored by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), which would allow federal antitrust agencies to issue civil penalties to Big Tech platforms, such as Amazon and Google, for unfairly preferencing their products on their platforms. The other big bill is the Open App Markets Act, sponsored by Blumenthal, which would force app store managers including Google and Apple to allow users to download apps from third-party sources. While Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said previously that he intended to bring the Klobuchar bill to the floor before the end of the term, it's unclear if the upper chamber will have time or if other measures will take priority. Schumer's and Klobuchar's offices did not respond to requests for comment from the Washington Examiner. Big Tech critics are eager for legislative action. "Antitrust is the only game in town for realistically holding big tech accountable," Internet Accountability Project founder Mike Davis told the Washington Examiner. While Davis, a conservative legal expert and Big Tech critic, is uncertain about anything moving in the lame-duck session, he said the AICOA is a high priority. The White House intends to lobby the Senate to pass the AICOA over the lame-duck session. Still, Adam Kovacevich, the CEO of the liberal tech group Chamber of Progress, which opposes the AICOA, downplayed the prospects for major antitrust legislation. "I think that bill sponsors and advocates tend to overstate the likelihood of their bill moving in the lame duck," he told the Washington Examiner.   While the bills have some Republican support, a Republican-led House would generally be less favorable to sweeping measures empowering regulators and cracking down on tech companies, meaning that the playing field is expected to be more favorable for Silicon Valley giants in 2023. Szabo said lawmakers should turn their focus from breaking up companies to addressing the tech recession and shrinking job market.

The 2nd-most significant cryptocurrency pulled off a major update to the way that it produces tokens, location a new precedent for the market and radically reducing its power use.

On Thursday, ethereum carried out what is currently being named the "Merge," a highly anticipated change to the way the currency validates tokens in its process.

"Happy merge all," tweeted ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin. "This is a large minute for the Ethereum ecosystem. Everybody who aided make the merge take place should really experience really very pleased now."

CRYPTO Marketplace SKEPTICAL ABOUT TREASURY CONCESSIONS ON Tornado Funds SANCTIONS

With the Merge, ethereum's method for producing the tokens tracked on its blockchain ledger, recognized as Ether, has transitioned from "proof of work" to "proof of stake."

The "evidence of do the job" technique experienced buyers "mine" the forex by acquiring computers method a series of algorithms in competitors with other desktops to generate Ether. Even though most cryptocurrencies use this method, it consumes an massive amount of money of power and has been the subject of scrutiny by New York regulators.

The Merge experienced ethereum swap to "evidence of stake," a technique of token development in which customers put in "validators," application that aids system transactions of ethereum and that requires them to maintain a minimum amount of 32 ETH, or about $53,000, in buy to be approved. The validators are then preferred randomly by an algorithm to "mine" coins and validate a linked block of transactions.

The update will have an tremendous impression on cryptocurrency's environmental influence, according to industry specialists. The transition will allegedly reduce the electrical power intake and carbon footprint of the ethereum network by around 99.988 % and 99.992%, according to a report from the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute.

The ethereum merge has been promoted for various years. Buterin wrote about "proof of stake" in a 2014 web site submit just before the forex came into existence and experienced been earning attempts to pursue the "Merge" for at the very least two several years. These efforts bundled partnering with the tech enterprise Consensys to make the "Beacon" chain, a separate ethereum blockchain that operated on "evidence of stake" because 2020.

Farewell, passwords: How Passkeys will transform digital privacy

A new sort of security authorization will open up the doorways for individuals to move past the password.

When Apple releases iOS 16 to the general public in September, it will debut the highly expected Passkey, a new form of stability authorization that will allow people to sign into an assortment of accounts with out obtaining to input their passwords around and around. If this new variety of electronic safety catches adequate awareness, it could help people halt relying on questionable passwords and appreciably boost the common user's electronic privateness techniques.

Passwords are "just not match for today's world wide web," FIDO Alliance Government Director Andrew Shikiar advised the Washington Examiner.

TONGA ERUPTION May BE Made STATUE OF LIBERTY-ENGULFING TSUNAMI: REPORT

The Passkey was declared in Could as element of a joint press launch by Google, Apple, and Microsoft promoting a "passwordless long run" based on new support for Rapidly Identification On the web, or FIDO, credentials. FIDO is an open up market affiliation that has been attempting to "assistance lower the world's in excess of-reliance on passwords" considering the fact that 2013.

FIDO credentials build on a electronic normal that works by using general public-vital cryptography to talk a stability authorization to the account and is regarded as a far more sophisticated model of two-issue authentication. These authorizations, or "keys," are saved in a cloud and are connected to person units. If a consumer required to log into an e-commerce web site, this sort of as Amazon or eBay, they would be expected to hook up their account to their Passkey on their cell gadget. They would then be equipped to unlock it via a cell pin or biometric details, these types of as a fingerprint or facial scan, therefore maintaining users' accounts locked to more trusted resources of id affirmation than long, complex passwords.

When FIDO credentials are not new, they have historically been relegated to governing administration entities and technological know-how firms because of to the fees and complexities of the credentials. They had been also minimal in that each individual unit essential its have FIDO credential to be usable, which made connecting it with an assortment of distinct personalized devices call for further energy. The current assistance will now allow for consumers to have a one set of FIDO qualifications that are linked to multiple gadgets. This assistance can also be utilised to sign into an application or web-site on a various system, no matter of the platform. The simple fact that Google, Apple, and Microsoft announced aid in the same way suggests that the wide bulk of new products will be in a position to incorporate the new security features with a straightforward update to their working technique. This will make the adoption of FIDO qualifications in relation to day to day equipment significantly a lot easier.

"At the conclusion of the day, buyers are faced with two critical inquiries when evaluating new systems that affect their over-all id administration: 'Is it secure?' and 'Is it handy?'" Jason Bohrer, executive director of the Safe Technological know-how Alliance, explained to the Washington Examiner. Bohrer argued that the simplicity of a cellular-device-based identity authorization process blended with the ease of a thing like a pin or facial scan would make the adoption of the new stability protocol less difficult.

What continues to be unsure is how extensive it could take for the technological innovation to be adopted. "Acquiring to a passwordless foreseeable future is a journey, not a dash," Shikiar extra. While Apple will be the 1st to apply the multidevice FIDO passkey through iOS 16, it will take time for users to undertake the new security gadgets as part of their every day life.

Cybersecurity experts are keen to examine the implications of the new apply in the in the vicinity of expression. "Though passwords would not go away when Apple launches this, Passkey absolutely has the potential more than time to minimize the phishing and account takeover attack surface when placing a new standard for how identification administration must just take location in the long run," cybersecurity software program organization Magnet Forensics Digitial Investigation Suite Director Stephen Boyce advised the Washington Examiner.

Passwords have historically been a common resource applied by hackers to entry significant parts. About 70% of cybercrimes in 1 12-month time period consisted of "social engineering attacks," in accordance to Microsoft's "Digital Protection Report" from September 2020. These assaults provided sending phishing emails to get vital login facts, these types of as passwords.

The 'Merge': How a one enhance is established to alter the cryptocurrency field

One of the world's premier cryptocurrencies is about to go as a result of an immense transform with ramifications for the complete technological know-how.

Ethereum, the next most-made use of cryptocurrency in the world, is expected to go via a big specialized transform in September regarded as the "Merge." The update is years in the making and will refine the currency's procedure. It has important implications for the political and environmental position of the cryptocurrency field.

"It really is modifying the motor as the car is driving," Ben Edginton, the world products lead at the blockchain software package company Consensys, instructed the Washington Examiner.

Largest PASSWORD Supervisor CONFIRMS IT WAS HACKED

The "Merge" will change the managing of tokens in the Ethereum system. If a person wanted to be included in producing or transacting Ethereum just before the "Merge," they would do so by way of a method recognized as "proof of get the job done." The "evidence of perform" technique has customers "mine" the forex by getting a computer method a sequence of algorithms in competitors with other personal computers to gain Ether, the tokens applied by the Ethereum blockchain, which is the ledger of transactions maintained on line by customers.

The "proof of do the job" course of action is applied by most crypto-related blockchains but consumes a huge total of vitality and has been the subject matter of scrutiny by regulators in New York and elsewhere. The "Merge" would enable diminish that vitality intake by swapping Ethereum from "proof of function" to "evidence of stake" by a merging of the most important Ethereum blockchain with the Beacon chain, a independent blockchain that Consensys aided start in 2020.

"Evidence of stake" results in Ethereum by obtaining buyers set up "validators," which are parts of application that aid method transactions on Ethereum. Validators demand people to hold a minimum of 32 ETH — or $54,000 worth of forex (as of Thursday). An algorithm selects validators randomly to "mine" cash and validate a related block. This approach would decrease power consumption considerably due to the fact it no longer requires the competing miners to be on-line regularly.

"By moving to 'proof of stake' and executing absent with a proof of work mechanism that is way too electrical power-intensive, you might be minimizing the electrical power demand," Invoice Hughes, the senior counsel and director of global relations at Consensys, told the Washington Examiner. A shift to "evidence of stake" could save 99.5% of the electrical power consumed by the Ethereum blockchain, in accordance to an estimate from the Ethereum Basis.

This "Merge" has been talked about for numerous a long time. Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin wrote about "proof of stake" in a 2014 blog post just before the forex arrived into existence, and he has been earning initiatives to pursue the "Merge" for at the very least two yrs. The most noteworthy hard work was the creation of the Beacon chain, a separate blockchain from the most important Ethereum cryptocurrency that ran on "proof of stake," in 2020. Consensys has been concerned in the operation of Beacon because its inception and has operate numerous exams to ensure that the chain will run without the need of any issues.

What continues to be unclear is no matter if the "Merge" will affect attempts by lawmakers to regulate the cryptocurrency sector. Hughes claimed that various lawmakers had approached him in search of information and facts about the "Merge." Even so, other analysts you should not see several reasons for regulators to take motion about the protocols that run Ethereum. "Specified the broad vary of apps and use situations that a protocol like Ethereum supports, we foresee that coverage and regulatory attempts will target the application layer, rather than the protocol layer," Sumedha Deshmukh, a plan expert at the Crypto Council for Innovation, explained to the Washington Examiner. "We're seeing this technique in proposed legislation all around the earth."

The Ethereum Basis declared that the computer software update necessary for the "Merge" would be implemented on Sept. 6. Edginton has been concerned in preparing for the "Merge" and statements that the update is expected to go seamlessly and to have minimal results on any transactions that may perhaps happen throughout the update course of action. The update is the to start with in a five-phase update to the Ethereum protocol that Buterin hopes will maximize scalability and shift Ethereum towards getting much more than a monetary software.
