U.S. military kills senior ISIS leader responsible for planning European attacks

The U.S. military killed a senior ISIS leader in Syria who was responsible for planning the terror group’s attacks into Europe, according to Central Command.

Khalid ‘Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri, whom CENTCOM described as being “responsible for planning ISIS attacks into Europe and developed the leadership structure for ISIS,” was killed in the “unilateral strike” on Monday.

“ISIS continues to represent a threat to the region and beyond,” General Michael “Erik” Kurilla said in a statement. “Though degraded, the group remains able to conduct operations within the region with a desire to strike beyond the Middle East.”

Al-Jabouri’s death will “temporarily disrupt the organization’s ability to plot external attacks,” CENTCOM added.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, said on Monday that one person was killed in a drone strike, which fits with CENTCOM reporting that there were no civilian casualties in the strike.

Al-Jabouri was targeted and killed near his home while he was walking and talking on the phone, SOHR reported.

The White Helmets organization tweeted that a man was killed by the strike on the outskirts of the town of Kili, in Idlib province.

CENTCOM has conducted dozes of strikes and operations in Syria to degrade ISIS’s ability to plan and execute attacks against U.S. forces and interests.They conducted an operation on Feb. 16 that resulted in the death of another “senior leader” Hamza al-Homsi, while four U.S. service members and a work dog were injured in an explosion during the mission.

Kurilla has maintained in statements and testimony in recent months that while these missions continue to degrade ISIS’s ability, the ideology “remains uncontained and unconstrained."

More United States forces were injured in an Iranian-backed rocket attack in Syria Friday. It followed the death of a U.S. contractor on Thursday, according to U.S. officials.

At least one more U.S. citizen was injured in the attacks on two U.S. bases in eastern Syria. The exact number of injured servicemen from Friday's attacks is not clear, but five servicemen and one U.S. contractor were injured in Thursday's attack. The other attack, on a base called Green Village, did not result in any injuries, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder.

The injured service members are in "stable" condition and have been transported to a hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, an unnamed senior defense official told WHD News.

“At the direction of President Biden, I authorized U.S. Central Command forces to conduct precision airstrikes tonight in eastern Syria against facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC),” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a statement. “The airstrikes were conducted in response to today’s attack as well as a series of recent attacks against Coalition forces in Syria by groups affiliated with the IRGC.”

The main air defense system at a U.S. military base in Northeast Syria was also allegedly not working properly at the time of the initial attack on Thursday. The reason the defensive system was "not fully operational" is not clear, and an investigation into the system failure is ongoing. It is also not clear whether the pro-Iranian forces knew that part of the system was down when they attacked.

Pro-Iranian forces in Syria said in an online statement on Friday that they have the capabilities to respond to further U.S. strikes against them, according to Reuters.

The recent attacks are not uncommon in Syria and Iraq, but fatalities are rare. Gen. Erik Kurilla, the head of U.S. Central Command, told lawmakers on Thursday that there have been nearly 80 attacks against U.S. forces by Iranian proxies since 2021.

Israeli fighter jets hit pro-Iranian targets in Syria on Sunday, with some of the targets located near Russia's main military bases in the country.

The attacks reportedly targeted sites in the city of Tartus, which is on Syria's Mediterranean coast, about 20 miles north of Lebanon's border, and sites near the Syrian capital of Damascus. Tartus is the home region of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Three Syrian soldiers were killed and three others were injured in the airstrikes, according to Syrian state media.

The reported strikes come just days after Syrian media reported that Israeli tanks had targeted Hezbollah observation posts in Syria near the border with Israel.

Flyers were also reportedly dropped over Syria on Friday warning the Syrian military against cooperating with Hezbollah and Iranian militias in the region.

The last alleged Israeli airstrikes in Syria were in late July and reportedly targeted pro-Iranian elements near Damascus, killing five Syrian soldiers and seven members of Hezbollah and other Iran-backed militias, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Israel has reportedly mostly avoided targeting Syria's coastal provinces in past strikes due to Russia's military presence in area.

In May, Israel claimed its fighter jets came under Russian anti-aircraft fire over Syria but were not struck, describing the incident as a "one-off" confrontation.
