An Arizona sheriff’s deputy has died following staying shot while trying to apprehend a theft suspect who barricaded himself from responding officers just before surrendering, authorities reported.

Yavapai County Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Lopez, 51, responded to the call in a Cordes Lake community around Stagecoach Trail and Purple Rock Road on Tuesday when the suspect shot him, Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes claimed at a news meeting on Tuesday evening. 

People referred to as 911 and responding officers located Lopez unresponsive at the scene, Rhodes explained. He was rushed to the nearest fireplace department and swiftly airlifted to a healthcare facility. Lopez underwent operation but did not endure.

Officers explained that the SWAT workforce was deployed to the scene when the suspect barricaded himself within his household. The suspect was inevitably taken into custody.

What led to the taking pictures was unclear, and Rhodes explained no further more specifics would be quickly introduced about the incident.

"The violence against legislation enforcement, we are looking at it escalate all over the place, and it has received to prevent," said Rhodes. "These are group servants. These are men and women that are out there serving the community, preserving everyday living, liberty, and residence, and they do not should have this."
