Special: Republicans on the Senate Homeland Safety and Governmental Affairs Committee are demanding answers from the Department of Homeland Safety (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, alleging that he misled the committee regarding the "character and scope" of the agency's controversial disinformation board.

Rating Member Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, is main colleagues in requesting that Chairman Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., hold a hearing with Mayorkas pertaining to his "deceptive testimony" just before the committee on Could 4 on the department's Disinformation Governance Board.

The disclosure of the board ignited a wave of general public backlash, forcing the DHS to set the board on pause and its appointed leader, Nina Jankowicz, to resign.

Last week, WHD News Digital first claimed on interior DHS files acquired by Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., offered through a whistleblower "that illustrate how the DGB was made to exert a potent influence above the government’s attempts to crack down on disinformation in areas where there are ‘clear, aim details.’" 

These purported files, the senators say, more illustrate that DHS was not only concentrated on international disinformation but also on domestic issues like the validity of elections, COVID-19 vaccines and the efficacy of wearing masks.

The lawmakers condition that the files received by Grassley and Hawley immediately contradict Mayorkas' testimony on the character and scope of the board and DHS will have to come back to the Hill in purchase to "provide the oversight and transparency the American community should have."

"We create to request you convene a hearing with Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas as before long as achievable to remedy vital issues about evidently misleading testimony right before the Committee on May possibly 4 on the Section of Homeland Stability Disinformation Governance Board (the Board)," the senators write in the letter to Peters, initially obtained by WHD News Digital.

They cite illustrations of contradictions, like that Mayorkas testified on May well 4 that the board "has not still begun its function." 

"Yet the paperwork suggest the Secretary experienced stood up the Board on February 24, 2022—more than two months earlier. The Board’s constitution, signed by the Secretary, expected the Board fulfill ‘regularly’ and "no much less than the moment per quarter,'" the senators reveal.

In addition, the lawmakers reference Mayorkas' response to a question from a reporter asking if American citizens would be monitored by the board. The secretary responded "No," also elaborating that "We at the Department of Homeland Stability never keep track of American citizens" and detailing that the board would only focus of "international threats."

The Republicans issue out the contradiction with talking factors geared up by the board's then-director.

"But talking points well prepared by Ms. Jankowicz, the Board’s then–Executive Director seem to show that the Section does in truth observe American citizens and that the Board’s do the job is concentrated on domestic threats. She writes that the Board’s preliminary work approach incorporates working with ‘industry on countering MDM [mis-, dis-, or mal-information] relevant to domestic violent extremism’ even further noting that the Section not long ago recognized a ‘domestic terrorism branch’ in just the Department’s Office environment of Intelligence and Analysis—the Department’s office environment accountable for accumulating and examining intelligence."

They conclude: "The American public warrants transparency and sincere answers to important issues about the genuine character and reason of the Disinformation Governance Board and it is very clear that Secretary Mayorkas has not provided them—to the community or this Committee. Thus, we request you maintain a hearing with Secretary Mayorkas and join us in insisting that all documents related to the Board be provided to the Committee prior to the hearing."

DHS did not immediately respond to WHD News Digital's ask for for comment.
