The mayor of La Crosse has refused to veto the city's ban on conversion remedy, in spite of tension from a coalition team.

The coalition includes folks from nearby churches, led by previous Metropolis Council members Tom Sweeney and Lorraine Decker. They rallied outside the house Metropolis Hall Tuesday afternoon forward of a 5 p.m. veto deadline for Mayor Mitch Reynolds.

Rally organizers say the ban is in immediate violation of the freedom of speech and religion outlined in the U.S. Constitution, the La Crosse Tribune described. Some individuals who attended the rally say they want to maintain the capacity to freely counsel folks on their sexuality and gender identity.

La Crosse has had a controversial week following a 6-4 vote to ban conversional treatment. ( )

The Prevalent Council voted 6-4 to ban conversion therapy last week, saying the ban guards "the health, protection and welfare of the individuals of the city of La Crosse."

Conversion treatment is a controversial follow that often impacts the LGBTQ local community by aiming to improve a person's sexual orientation or gender id.

La Crosse is the 14th town in Wisconsin to ban conversion therapy. Though the ban was opposed by some, it has the guidance of the College District of La Crosse, the YWCA of La Crosse, overall health industry experts and other local community associates.

The group will now target on getting a present-day council member who voted to ban conversion remedy to rethink the vote, in accordance to Sweeny.
