Fireplace rips through Massachusetts boat garden, black smoke observed for miles

A big fireplace in a Massachusetts boat yard ruined several boats, buildings and autos Friday, generating enough smoke that it was picked up by temperature radar.

In footage taken by a nearby new outlet the boatyard was engulfed in flames and black smoke.

The extent of the damage is unclear. But on the Mattapoisett Boatyard’s web page it states the boatyard caters principally to leisure boaters, and has the capacity to shop up to 150 vessels.

"A boat caught fire in just one of the sheds, and it went up pretty, extremely speedy," Tim Price, a mechanic at the boatyard, told WJAR-Tv set. "Anything went up. I consider we dropped almost everything."

The Mattapoisett fire department has not yet produced data relating to the fire.
