Republicans on the Residence Oversight Committee are investigating alleged efforts by the Section of Homeland Safety to impede oversight probes related to the southern border led by the Office of Inspector General—specifically referring to a memo advising DHS workforce on how to steer clear of turning more than files to the agency’s watchdog. 

In a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the GOP lawmakers lifted concerns about the inside memo which, they say, allegedly encouraged workers "on how to impede OIG investigations."

The memo the GOP lawmakers have been referring to was allegedly circulated amongst U.S. Customs and Border Protection staff members in planning for a meeting with DHS OIG staff.

The GOP lawmakers observed that the DHS secretary "may only protect against the OIG from pursuing oversight in pretty confined scenarios to preserve countrywide stability where by such an exception is issued by the Secretary in writing and described to Congress."

"We have obtained no report that you have invoked these an exception during your tenure," they wrote.
