Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Georgia crisis Toivo Klaar highlighted the deployment of the EU civilian mission in Armenia and referred to the mission’s activities at the meeting held today.

At the meeting, according to the statement of the RA Foreign Ministry, the interlocutors touched on regional security and stability issues, exchanged ideas on issues related to the development of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh problem.

Mirzoyan and Klaar also exchanged ideas on the unblocking of regional transport infrastructure, as well as the work of border security and demarcation commissions.

“Ararat Mirzoyan reaffirmed the need to eliminate the consequences of Azerbaijan’s recent aggression against the sovereign territory of Armenia, particularly the withdrawal of the Azerbaijani armed forces from the sovereign territories of Armenia,” the message said.

The agreement on sending a civilian mission to Armenia was reached in Prague as a result of hours-long negotiations between the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, France and the European Council. Baku, which until then had rejected the European Union’s offer to deploy armed forces on the border with Armenia, did not object to an unarmed mission, at the same time emphasizing that it would cooperate “to the extent that it is relevant”.
