The Republican Party has sued Google for allegedly redirecting e-mails from the party to the spam folder by the internet giant. Google thus limits the ability to raise funds, according to the complaint, which is filed barely three weeks before the midterm elections in the United States. The party speaks of “political discrimination”.

The board of the Republican Party (RNC) says that the messages sent usually end up in the inboxes of the party’s supporters. But at the end of the month, that’s no longer the case. Then those emails end up in the spam folder, making it highly unlikely that the messages will be read.

“The end of the month has historically been the most successful time for the RNC’s fundraising efforts,” notes the suit filed Friday in a federal court in Sacramento, California.

“Working for months”

Republicans say the problem has been going on for 10 months. Attempts to resolve the matter in conjunction with Google have been unsuccessful. The RNC is now seeking damages and a court order seeking to remedy Google’s “violations of the law”.

“As we’ve said repeatedly, we don’t filter emails based on political affiliation,” said José Castañeda, a Google spokesperson. “Gmail’s spam filters mirror users’ actions.”

Republicans have long argued that tech giants are censoring conservatives and their views, something the companies deny.
