American toxicologist David Smith expressed his opinion that the former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, was poisoned with heavy metals, and called for his release and the opportunity to be treated abroad.

The American expert told about it to the participants of the court session on the postponement of Saakashvili’s imprisonment in the city court of Tbilisi, to whom he appealed from the USA.

“I assume that Saakashvili was poisoned with various types of heavy metals, which had an extremely negative effect on his entire organism. As a result of the poisoning, the brain was damaged and signs of senility appeared,” said Smith, noting that in addition to the brain, the liver and heart were also damaged.

According to an American specialist, the poisonings could have happened in prison.

“The patient Saakashvili is in an extremely serious condition, it can lead not only to disability, but also to death. He needs to be transported to a hospital where complete detoxification of the body is possible. There are no similar clinics in Georgia, but there are in the United States,” said Smith.

At the request of Saakashvili’s lawyers, more than 20 specialists will express their opinions in court.

Saakashvili arrived in Georgia on September 29 last year, on the eve of local elections. He was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1 and transferred to Rustavi prison, where he went on a hunger strike.

On November 8, he was transferred to Tbilisi prison hospital and then to Gori military hospital.

Since May 22 of this year, he is in the “Vivamed” private hospital in Tbilisi.

Saakashvili has been charged in Georgia with various articles, one of which is the abuse of official powers. He denies all the charges and calls the lawsuits political persecution.

Saakashvili’s supporters call on the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, to pardon the former president. Zurabishvili refused to comment on the matter yesterday, saying “the final decision will be made when it is made”.
