In northern Germany, a sight that can raise eyebrows has started to appear on the balconies of apartment buildings: people are installing solar panels on the balcony railing of even their small balconies.

The reason is, of course, the energy crisis shaking Germany and rising energy bills.

To ease the situation, the Ministry of the Environment of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has also prepared a support package of ten million euros for households, so that they can install solar panels called balcony power plants on their balconies.

Of the sum, six million euros have been reserved for people living in rented accommodation. You can get support of around 550 euros, and it requires a personal contribution of 1,000 euros.

According to the Norddeutsche Rundfunk TV company, the support of “balcony power plants” with tax funds has attracted a lot of criticism.

The local taxpayers’ union has criticized the support package as a waste of tax funds. At best, an apartment building resident can cover ten percent of his electricity consumption with his balcony power plant and reduce his electricity bill by at least one hundred euros a year.

It has also been pointed out that one new technology 5.5 megawatt wind turbine produces more electricity than 20,000 balcony turbines.

Landlords are concerned about the costs to residents that may arise from damage to balconies.

However, according to the news, the balcony power plant is of interest to many people, and there is not enough grant money for all those who want it.

Norddeutsche Rundfunk’s news video shows how the balcony power plant was installed.
