LISTEN: Scarlett Johansson says she was 'groomed' to be 'bombshell-type actor'

Actress Scarlett Johansson claimed she was "groomed" as a teenager to become a "bombshell-type actor" in a recent interview.

"I was kind of being groomed, in a way, to be this what you call a bombshell-type actor. I was playing the other woman and the object of desire, and I suddenly found myself cornered in this place. I couldn’t get out of it,” she said on Bruce Bozzi's podcast Table for Two.

"Young girls like that are really objectified, and that's just a fact," Johansson told him, discussing her projects as a teenager.

"Whatever box they're put into, it sort of sets you on this trajectory," she said, noting that women have more ability to choose their own path now.

“I did Lost in Translation and Girl With the Pearl Earring, and by that point, I was 18, 19, and I was coming into my own womanhood and learning my own desirability and sexuality," she explained.

"It would be easy to sit across from someone in that situation and go, ‘This is working.’ But for that kind of bombshell, you know, that burns bright and quick, and then it’s done, and you don’t have opportunity beyond that," the actress continued.

She is well known for roles in films such as Lost in Translation, Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Nanny Diaries, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Hitchcock, and The Avengers franchise, among other projects.

Last year, Johansson made headlines when she said actors shouldn't be obligated to be political spokesmen. "Some people want to, but the idea that you're obligated to because you're in the public eye is unfair,” she said. “You didn't choose to be a politician, you're an actor.”

The actress's view is increasingly rare as celebrities become more and more active in politics through the use of social media, particularly Democratic political campaigns.
