The first Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 displays in Spain draw more than 187,000 visitors

Since last September 2022, more than 187.000 people have visited the opening exhibits of the “Picasso Celebration 1973-2023” in Spain at the Mapfre Foundation, the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, and the Picasso Museum Barcelona. The artwork is a part of the official program that will mark the 50th anniversary of the artist’s passing through 2024, which falls on April 8.

It specifically refers to the Mapfre Foundation shows “Julio González, Pablo Picasso and the dematerialization of sculpture,” “Picasso/Chanel,” at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, and “Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler.” Publisher and art trader in Barcelona’s Picasso Museum.

The exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, which debuted on October 11, attracted more than 113,000 visitors in its first three months, compared to 50,000 visitors to the Mapfre Foundation and more than 24,000 visitors to the Museu Picasso Barcelona.

Between September and December, the governments of Spain and France launched exhibitions in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, and the United States, respectively, as part of their 50 exhibitions and events honoring Pablo Picasso’s life and artistic output.

Additionally, from December 1 to 2, the International Congress “Picasso from Cultural Studies” was held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofa. Spain’s Dream and Lies (1898–1922) whereby the historical context of the Malaga artist’s life between 1898 and 1922 was addressed.
