WATCH: NFL player covers $10,000 in customer layaway balances before Christmas

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster paid off around $10,000 in layaway balances at Burlington in Kansas City, Missouri, just in time for Christmas.

"Recap of our @TeamJuJu Kansas City pay-away-the-lay-away with ! We paid off nearly $10,000 in layaway balances for gifts and holiday essentials at @Burlington!" the Juju Foundation tweeted along with a video.

In the video, Smith-Schuster talks about experiencing Christmases when money was tight and he had to share gifts. He explained that he wants to give back because he knows what that is like.

At the Burlington store in Kansas City, the video also features the football star talking to patrons who he is helping this holiday season.

"I really appreciate it," one grateful woman tells him.

Smith-Schuster also took photos with the shoppers he helped.

"I love it so much because being a part of the community is what it's all about," he said. "These people are die-hard fans. They support us every Sunday, every game that we play in."

"It's just nice that I have an opportunity to be a role model to these kids and to give back to the community," Smith-Schuster added.

This isn't the football player's first venture into community service and philanthropy. In 2021, while he was in Pittsburgh, he helped provide 500 hot Thanksgiving meals to people in need in the community. He participated in the same event in 2020. “Since last year was such a challenging time for many, we wanted to be sure COVID-19 wasn’t stopping anyone from enjoying a Thanksgiving meal,” he said last year. “We’re so excited to be able to double the number of meals we are passing out this Thanksgiving."
