Iran’s Supreme Chief Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed a brand new police commander, telling him to make sure public safety after lethal protests swept the nation.

Brigadier-Common Ahmadreza Radan, previously head of a police analysis unit, changed Hossein Ashtari, who had led the nationwide power for eight years, the state-run Islamic Republic Information Company reported.

Khamenei urged Radan to “defend the safety of the folks and safe public welfare” and enhance police “capabilities,” in accordance with an announcement.

The change follows a crackdown by safety forces on nationwide protests which have gripped Iran since Sept. 16, when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody following her arrest for sporting allegedly improper garments underneath the nation’s Islamic regulation.
