London and Brussels are still locked in what seems an endless negotiation on the Northern Ireland Protocol, which is part of the Brexit agreement and which has generated not only a major conflict on both sides of the English Channel, but also in this small constituent nation of the United Kingdom, currently without political head due to the refusal of the unionists to form a government if this issue is not resolved beforehand.

And although top-level negotiations have been taking place for weeks that suggested that an announcement by the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, on a deal was imminent, with the local press even pointing to a possible declaration this Monday, the only thing confirmed so far is that if a press conference is held, it will be in the afternoon and with company. And it is that the ‘premier’ will receive in Berkshire, England, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, after this Sunday they decided, as they explained in a statement, to continue the negotiations “in person” to achieve “solutions practical and shared’ on the Protocol.

“Today, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, agreed continue your work in person towards practical and shared solutions to the range of complex challenges surrounding the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland,” the European Commission said in a statement.

Meanwhile, British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab assured this Sunday in an interview on Sky News that he is already on the verge of “an agreement.” “We want to make sure that all the pieces are in place. But I think hopefully there will be good news in a matter of days, not weeks,” he said. Sunak also declared to ‘The Sunday Times’ that his government is “giving everything” so that the result is “positive”. But in addition to negotiating with Brussels, in British territory he will have to convince the Democratic Unionist Party that his treatment is satisfactory, so that, at least, it does not oppose him.
