Bar maker Mondelez International has said that by the end of the year, it will move Toblerone production to Slovakia, where the company also produces Milka chocolate.

Iconic The Matterhorn mountain will be removed from Toblerone chocolate bars as the production of the bar moves out of Switzerland. The news agency reports on the matter, among others Bloomberg.

The top of the Matterhorn is to be replaced on the Toblerone packaging with a more generic Alpine mountain peak, says Mondelez International, which manufactures the bars. The reason is Swiss legislation, which restricts the use of Swiss imagery in products that are not produced in certain parts of the country.

The almost 4.5 kilometer high Matterhorn mountain is located on the border between Switzerland and Italy. In addition to the removal of the mountain, Toblerone packaging will in the future read “established in Switzerland”. Currently, the packaging says “of Switzerland”, loosely translated from Switzerland.

Toblerone has been produced in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, since 1908, and those with keen eyes may have noticed that the bar’s packaging also depicts a bear, which symbolizes Bern.

Toblerone was originally founded in Switzerland Theodor Tobler as well as his cousin Emil Bauman. The name is a mix of the founder Tobler’s name and the Italian word torrone, which refers to nougat.

Mondelez International has said that it will move Toblerone production to Slovakia by the end of the year, where the company also produces Milka chocolate.

Mondelez is an American multinational company that has acquired well-known food products from different parts of the world. It has owned Toblerone since 2012.
