Maxim Tucker, journalist van The times, posted a video on Twitter showing smoke billowing from a thermal power plant in the capital. Mayor Klitschko has since confirmed the attack on the plant and reports that 40 percent of Kiev residents are currently without heating. It is currently 4 degrees in Kiev. “The water supply is working normally.”

Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

Due to shelling, the Russian-occupied nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, Ukraine, has been disconnected from the electricity grid again, operator Energoatom announced on Thursday morning. The attacks have cut the last line between the nuclear plant and the power grid, the agency says. Emergency diesel generators are switched on to ensure a minimum power supply. This allows the center to continue for ten days, it says.

It’s not the first time this has happened. Also in August of last year, the nuclear power plant was temporarily disconnected for the first time in almost 40 years. It then took two weeks for the plant to regain power. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko called the attacks “barbaric”.

Five dead in Lviv region

In the Lviv region of western Ukraine, five civilians were killed by a Russian missile strike on Thursday. This was announced by the regional governor on Telegram. The victims are three men and two women.

A Russian missile came down on a residential area in the Zolotchiv district. Three houses were destroyed, Governor Maksym Kozytsky said. He does not rule out that there are still victims under the rubble.

Three killed in Kherson, one in Dnipro

Three people were killed in Kherson, southern Ukraine, on Thursday morning, Andriy Yermak, head of the presidential administration, said. According to Yermak, a stop for public transport was targeted. The governor of the Dnipro region reported the death of a 34-year-old man.

“Mass attack”

On the city and region of Kharkov, “the enemy has made about fifteen attacks,” Governor Oleg Sinegoebov reports online. He also warned that there is a risk of further attacks. “The occupiers again targeted essential installations.” A home was also hit, the governor said.

In the city of Kharkiv, there are problems with electricity supply after energy infrastructure was hit, mayor Igor Terechov said.

Also in the Odessa region, “missiles have hit regional energy infrastructure and damaged residential buildings,” said Governor Maksim Marchenko. He talks about a “massive missile attack”. “Fortunately, there are no casualties,” the governor continues. He did warn of a second wave of attacks and asked civilians to keep sheltering. Restrictions on electricity use are also set.

Serhi Hamali, the governor of the western Ukrainian region of Khmelnytsky, also reports that “the enemy is attacking essential infrastructure”. He calls on the inhabitants to stay in the bomb shelters.

34 out of 81 Russian missiles shot down

Ukraine shot down 34 out of 81 Russian missiles on Thursday, as well as four out of eight Iranian-made drones. The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian troops announced this on Telegram.

According to Melinda Simmons, the British ambassador to Ukraine, the Russian attacks are “far from over”. “Friends and colleagues in Kiev were woken up this morning by explosions and shaking windows,” she wrote on Twitter. “This is far from over and the only option left for the Ukrainians is to drive the Russians out of their borders again.”

Zelensky: “It was a difficult night”

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky has responded to the massive Russian attacks via the messaging app Telegram. “It was a difficult night,” said Zelensky. “The whole country was under fire. Attacks on infrastructure and homes. Unfortunately, there are injuries and deaths. My condolences to the affected families.”

“The enemy fired 81 missiles in an attempt to intimidate the Ukrainians again,” the president continued. “Returning to their wretched tactic: terrorizing civilians is all they can do. But it won’t help them. They will not shirk responsibility for everything they have done.”
