According to the Prosecutor’s Office of Poitiers, a 30-year-old man who took part in the environmental demonstration against agricultural dams on Saturday in Sainte-Soline, west-central France, is in critical condition and is on the verge of death.

A hard collision caused the man’s head injury, while two other protesters—a 19-year-old woman with face damage and a 27-year-old man with a fractured foot—were given emergency medical care.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office’s remaining “provisional” information, a total of 29 gendarmes were hurt, including 2 who are in a life-threatening emergency. According to the BFMTV network, two journalists were also admitted to the hospital due to a family situation.

A probe “to ascertain the exact nature” of the serious injuries suffered by a total of three protestors and “the circumstances in which” these people were hurt has been announced by prosecutor Julien Wattebled.

200 demonstrators have been hurt, 40 of them seriously, according to the organizers, Land Uprisings, as a result of the violent battles with the Police.

According to the authorities, there were about 6,000 persons at the illegal rally, although the organizers estimate that there were 30,000. In order to protest this practice, which they believe suggests the commercialization of a public resource like water, the activists sought to occupy the agricultural reservoir.

The government called the incidents a “wave of unbearable violence,” and it blames the protestors; however, the organizers say the police are to fault for the conflicts.

This event adds to the recent violent outbursts during protests against the pension reform, which included significant rioting and more than 400 arrests last Thursday in Paris, the nation’s capital. Human rights organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have condemned the “excessive use of force.”
